French Christmas Traditions
Unlike Christmas celebrations in US which are usually held on Christmas Day, French families focus their celebrations on Christmas Eve. French famiilies traditionally celebrate Christmas by attending La Messe de Minuit on Christmas Eve which is followed by a huge feast, called le Réveillon, which in French means to wake up or to revive. Le Réveillon is a symbolic awakening to the meaning of Christ's birth and is the culinary high point of the season; it is celebrated at home, in a restaurant or cafés that are open all night. French children have something similar to our Santa -- they put their shoes in front of the fireplace, in the hopes that Pere Noel (aka Papa Noel) fill them with gifts.
